Voxels versus Polygons

چکیده

The decision to use either the Direct Volume Rendering paradigm or the Indirect Volume Rendering paradigm to visualize a volume dataset is a topical question in Volume Graphics. Unfortunately, it seems that this question has not been suuciently addressed so far and is not easy to answer. In this paper, we discuss some of the advantages and disadvantages of one candidate for each of these paradigms; Ray Casting for Direct Volume Rendering and Marching Cubes for Indirect Volume Rendering. The discussion is based on two cartesian grid scalar data elds, a CT scan of a lobster { immersed in resin, and a MRI scan of a human head. These datasets have interesting properties which show diierent features using diierent Volume Rendering techniques. Two measurements are considered for our discussion; visual quality and the consumption of resources, such as time and memory.

An Interactive Hybrid Renderer using Multi-Layer Depth

Current interactive hybrid (combined volume and surface) rendering techniques are only able to embed opaque polygonal objects and therefore cannot provide accurate depth perception of semi-transparent surfaces. This paper proposes a volume rendering approach based on a Multi-Layer Depth Map (MDM) that enables multiple translucent polygons to be embedded. This novel approach generates multiple d...

Methods for obtaining very thin tunnel-free discretizations of polyhedral surfaces

Having advanced algorithms for discretizing polyhedral surfaces (usually triangulations) is of significant practical importance, since for various applications it is sufficient to work with a polyhedral approximation of a given surface rather than with the surface itself. Often this is the only possibility since the surface may not be available in an explicit form. On the other hand, sometimes ...

Adaptive Voxel Subdivision for Ray Tracing

Although regular subdivision has been shown to be efficient at ray tracing scenes where objects are evenly distributed, such algorithms perform poorly when objects are concentrated in a small number of voxels. In this paper, a method is presented where voxels in a regular grid are examined and recursively subdivided depending on object density. This integration of regular and adaptive spatial s...

Textured Depth Meshes

This paper presents a new approach to generate textured depth meshes (TDMs), an impostor-based scene representation that can be used to accelerate the rendering of static polygonal models. The TDMs are precalculated for a fixed viewing region (view cell). The approach relies on a layered rendering of the scene to produce a voxel-based representation. Secondary, a highly complex polygon mesh is ...
